Short attention span? These five playful exercises strengthen your child's concentration — without any pressure.

Why Do Many Children Struggle With Concentration?

Concentration is not an innate trait — it's a skill that can be trained. Sensory overload, lack of movement and stress are common causes of concentration problems. The good news: with simple exercises, parents can make a big difference.

1. The Breath Rocket (3 minutes)

Your child breathes in deeply and imagines a rocket slowly launching. As they exhale, they make a quiet „Sssss“ sound for as long as possible. This exercise calms the nervous system and helps sharpen focus.

Ideal before homework.

2. The Sound Detective (5 minutes)

Sit down with your child, close your eyes and listen together. What sounds do you hear? The ticking clock? Birds? Cars? Who hears more?

This exercise trains attention and is fun.

3. Spelling Backwards (5 minutes)

Start with short words: DOG → G-O-D. Gradually increase the difficulty. This exercise challenges working memory and concentration in a playful way.

4. Balance Challenge (5 minutes)

Have your child stand on one leg, balance a ping-pong ball on a spoon, or walk along a line. Balance exercises activate the brain and improve concentration ability.

5. The Silent Minute (1 minute)

Set a timer for one minute. During this time, everyone sits still and only observes their thoughts. Afterwards, each person shares what came to mind.

A gentle introduction to mindfulness.

Tip

Practise regularly, but in short sessions. 5 minutes daily is better than 30 minutes once a week. And most importantly: join in! Children learn best through example.

Concentration is like a muscle — the more often you train it, the stronger it gets. Be patient with your child and celebrate small steps forward.
