Tutoring no longer enough? Find out when professional learning therapy is the right decision and what distinguishes it from classical tutoring.

Tutoring vs. Learning Therapy: The Difference

Tutoring focuses on current school content. Learning therapy goes deeper — it works on the foundations, on thought processes, and on the child's emotional relationship with learning. If a child hasn't understood the basics, there's little point in repeating the current material.

Tutoring

  • Repeats school material
  • Exam preparation
  • Group setting possible
  • Short-term solution

Learning Therapy

  • Builds foundations
  • Individual assessment
  • One-to-one setting
  • Long-term development

10 Signs Your Child May Need Learning Therapy

  1. Despite practice, no progress is made
  2. Homework regularly ends in arguments or tears
  3. Your child often says „I'm stupid“ or „I can't do this“
  4. The teacher recommends an assessment
  5. Your child actively avoids certain subjects
  6. The gap between oral and written performance is large
  7. Your child fears tests or school in general
  8. Basic concepts (numbers, letters) remain uncertain
  9. Your child reacts physically (stomach aches, headaches before school)
  10. Motivation is continuously decreasing

What Happens in Learning Therapy?

Learning therapy always begins with a thorough assessment. This identifies not only academic level, but also the child's strengths, learning strategies and emotional situation. On this basis, an individual support plan is developed.

How Do I Find the Right Learning Therapist?

  • Look for solid training and certification
  • Ask about experience in the specific area (dyscalculia, dyslexia, ADHD)
  • A free initial consultation should be standard
  • Ask how parents are included
  • Trust your gut feeling — the chemistry has to be right
Cost Coverage: Who Pays for Learning Therapy?

In Germany, learning therapy is not covered by statutory health insurance. Under certain conditions, however, the Youth Welfare Office (Jugendamt) can cover the costs (integration assistance under § 35a SGB VIII). I'm happy to advise whether this applies to your situation.

The first step is often the hardest. But if you've read this article all the way through, that shows you're thinking carefully — and that already means a lot. Book a free initial consultation today.
